Tokyo Summer Olympics 2020 – Opportunities for Swiss SMEs

The Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo may offer Swiss SMEs interesting business opportunities. To successfully participate in the tendering procedures, Swiss exporters can rely on support from Switzerland Global Enterprise (S-GE).

Briefing Tokyo

In 2020, Tokyo will host the Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government expects the Games to generate economic effects worth CHF 275 billion across Japan, including CHF 173.6 billion in Tokyo alone. It is also estimated that the Olympics will help create 1.94 million jobs.

The Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (TOC) has released guidelines for all procurement for the Olympics. The initial focus will be on infrastructural procurement in 2017 and early 2018, followed by supplies in late 2018, and, potentially, food services thereafter. The procurement information will be placed on different websites depending on who issues the tenders. While some tenders will be available in English, others will only be published in Japanese.

Potential Swiss suppliers need to be aware that the windows for submitting tender documents are extremely short. Because of language barriers, it is strongly advised for Swiss SMEs without a subsidiary to work together with Japanese partners.

Market leaders favored

The Games are to a large extent a prestige project. Companies that are market leaders in their sector or have recent experience in executing projects for the Olympics or other large sports events would have a clear advantage. As construction and infrastructure projects are practically closed to foreign companies, Swiss SMEs will have easier access to the following areas:

  • Tourism and hospitality business (refurbishing of hotels, event management, food and beverage services)
  • Security and safety business (stadium security, public safety and security, people flow management and cyber security)
  • IT (tourism software and mobile payment solutions)
  • Mobility (renewal of public transportation infrastructure and vehicles, traffic management solutions and eco-friendly transportation services)
  • Building industry (upgrading of existing buildings, i.e. insulation, energy management, weatherproof exteriors and eco-friendly interiors)
