An optical measuring device for monitoring the scrubber wash water of exhaust gas cleaning systems on sea vessels has impressed a jury: the Central Switzerland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHZ) has selected Sigirist-Photometer AG from Ennetbürgen as the winner of its innovation award this year. Its prize-winning product, the ScrubberGuard, monitors the scrubber wash water of exhaust gas cleaning systems for the measuring parameters turbidity, oil traces, pH value and temperature. As the IHZ reported in a press release, this ensures compliance with the criteria and regulatory limits of the Marine Environmental Protection Committee (MEPC). The device therefore plays an important role in the environmental protection activities of ocean shipping.
The measuring system is characterized by its non-contact free-fall measurement, which means the optics always remain clean. An “ingenious 2-level system” was also developed to efficiently eliminate air bubbles and ensure constantly reliable measuring values. What’s more, recalibration is performed automatically. These features are reportedly unique worldwide.
“The development of a complete system that takes into account the diverse requirements of the shipping industry on all oceans of the world impressed the jury,” said president of the jury Hans Wicki in the press release. He would be proud to present Sigirist-Photometer AG with the award at the official ceremony on 26 November. The IHZ innovation award is sponsored by UBS Switzerland AG and Luzerner Kantonalbank AG (LUKB).
